ok, I usually don't do stuff like this, but I figured when I believe in certain things, I want to share, in the event that others have the same belief and want to support as much as I do.

I have a few Director friends that are in the midsts of rounding up financial support for their films. This isn't something like approaching big investors or people with a lot of money. They are taking the community approach with sites like indiegogo.com and kickstarter.com with the option for people to support the films with as little as $10 if they like/believe in the project.
Bear with me, because there are 3 friends I'd like to tell you about.

I've already become a supporter of this film and believe in Gary's vision. After watching the videos at the site and reading about Gary and his film, it might be something that you'd like to be a part of and help support. The film is an Indie Musical, and treads on ground that independent films hardly do, if ever. The fact that it's original and a unique vision, is why I chose to support it. Keep in mind that with KICKSTARTER site, if Gary does NOT make it to his goal, he does not get ANY of the funds already donated.

Chad's film 'THRALL" http://ping.fm/JmxCa is incredibly right up my alley. It is a new vision of horror "Disenchanted by American horror films recent destruction via glossy CGI, rehashed re-booted re-makes, and campy, cheap thrills; writer/director Chad Rullman is on a mission to develop a truly scary and suspenseful horror movie. One that will reclaim the genre, and bring American horror films back to the heights achieved in the 70s & 80s."
Chad has extensive experience with directing especially Music Video for metal bands. I highly recommend checking out his work on vimeo http://ping.fm/Z5fTq . Again, you can donate as little as $10 to become part of the crew, and help Chad bring his vision to life. The short film will then become a vehicle to help finance and get backing for a feature length film based on the story in Thrall.

3) Mattson Tomlin, http://ping.fm/RVKBC This dude is still a film student and is cranking out quality stuff. His film "Solomon Grundy Born on a Monday" http://ping.fm/dZJUa is based on the 19th century nursery rhyme. CHeck out the kickstarter site http://kck.st/9eJkLR and see if this is something you'd like to donate to.

These aren't just any ol' indie directors. They are directors that are driven by the passion for their craft and originality of their vision. I've seen my fair share of indie projects and most if not all have been not even near the quality of these self funded talents. And by quality i am not only talking about the actual film...I'm speaking of the quality of these directors' character and passion.

Feel free to donate to all, or just one or two.
Maybe skip Starbucks for a day or two to help out the ARTS & CREATIVITY!
I figured I would pass all this along to help these guys out. Oh, and I have NOTHING to do with these productions at all. I just believe in them.

Broken Moment

Below is a 2min piece of music I wrote for a very very short film written and directed by Eric Blue / Blue Lantern Productions.
I've worked with Eric on a few of his films in the past, mainly LOOK and LOST CROSSING. Both of which were excellent experiences.
This latest short was shot in one day, and I believe in just a few hours actually. It's an era piece, with no dialogue leaving all the story in the hands of the actors' faces/emotions and the music.
Since the music was required to play a larger roll since there was no dialogue, I need to bring in live players to convey the emotion that no samples can do. I recorded friends Victor Lawrence on Cello, and Mark Robertson on Violin. Both did an EXCEPTIONAL job and really brought the piece to life. Take a listen and enjoy!!

When the film is complete and out of post production, I will be posting the short right here. So check back so you can see the music against picture!

Crackdown 2

Some real quick cool news that I've been wanting to share. Recently I was signed on by Microsoft Games Studios to provide the music for Ruffian's Crackdown 2. The sequel to the award-winning vertical-world adventure, Crackdown. Being a huge fan of the first Crackdown, I am extremely stoked to be part of the sequel, not to mention to be working with some pretty intelligent creative audio peeps at Microsoft.

Hey everyone, as you can see by some alterations on my blog here, I am changing some things up. I am in a very slow process of blending my main site into this blog. This way, there can be a one stop location for anything that is happening with my music and/or collaborations. Plus I am going to lose the 'Third Person' news updates. There is no reason to keep a wall up between myself and anyone interested in my creativity. One of the main reasons I wanted to move everything over to this blog, was for that main reason, so I can connect more with the people that are coming by and visiting my site.

When all is said and done, and the mutation has taken place, my main site's domain will then point to this blog. So no one will miss a thing.

I'd love to hear what ideas you have about this...if you have any, that would enhance your time you spend on this site.

I am happy to be able to finally announce that I will be creating the score for Sega and Gearbox's upcoming title Aliens: Colonial Marines. There is not much more i can say at the moment, other than I am stoked to be working on this game. Being one of my favorite film franchises ever, it will certainly be a blast creating an original score for the game at the same time paying homage to past composers' work of whom i respect greatly. More news coming soon hopefully!

Recently I met up with Director Paul Del Velcchio. Paul had a short film released as an additional feature last year on George Romero's DVD "Diary of the Dead." The film at that time had used library music. Being that I am currently thickening up my resume within the horror/thriller genre I offered to re-score the short with something more suited for the picture. i have this painting/picture hanging in my studio that I purchased about 3 years ago. I have since lost all info on the artist responsible for said painting. The ONLY thing I have to go by is the initials 'A.P. '03" on the bottom right corner of the picture. Does any one out there in the vast reaches of the inter web world know who this artist is?!

I just wanted to write a quick post about connecting on Facebook. Ever since joining Facebook almost a year ago, I have received quite a few friend requests from fans and fellow composers. Please do not be offended if I did not accept to connect on Facebook. Currently I am only using Facebook as a social site to connect with friends and family, to stay in touch with those especially living thousands of miles away.

As a nice change of pace from the usual style of writing I do, I just got done finishing up a score for a 5min short romantic/comedy film called Unnoticed by up & coming director/writer Danny LeGare who's based here in Los Angeles. I met Danny back at the Cinema City International Film Festival here in Universal City, during which the film Rogue 379 I scored was being shown. Danny and I had great conversation that night and decided there'd be potential to work together in the future. Sure enough, last week he calls up in need of some music for his short he just got done filming. Being that I really liked his attitude towards the art of film making, I with out a doubt said yes, even prior to seeing a print of the film or knowing what the heck it was about. Being that the film was ONLY 5 min long, even if it was terrible, it wouldn't be that difficult to get through. But alas, the short was really good and shot beautifully, and I thoroughly enjoyed working on the music for it. The score has some usual flavors of a romantic comedy, mainly your 'always go to, romantic comedy sound', pizzicato strings. The pizz were the underlying element of the score, naturally, but on top of that I included elements of accordian, bass guitar, various lite perc, and processed guitars. All which blended rather well to convey a soft underlying bed to help support the pace and emotional content of the short.
I look forward to working with Danny again if the opportunity arises.

On another note, I am assembling a new cd demo package in hopes on getting it to some production companies.
Currently sifting through the archives of all the thriller/horror/scary-ass tracks I have. seems i have a lot of that stuff.

Johnny Hollow

It isn't very often that I get this excited when discovering new musical acts. The latest band I have had the pleasure of coming across is 'Johnny Hollow'. They are a very awesome blend of Goth, Ambient & Electronica. Personally I don't think the 3 of those genres does an explanation of their sound any justice. They are unique and I have really enjoyed listening to them over the last few days. I discovered them through the artist My Pet Skeleton, which I have been a fan of for quite some time, but never really saw a connection between both, until recently.
Currently only one of their albums is available on iTunes. I can not seem to find their most recent release for sale via digital download. It is however, on their site for streaming, but not of the best quality of course.
I don't know exactly what it is about them that strikes me. Maybe it's partly due to that fact that it brings me back to my youth listening to bands with this sort of sound, or maybe it strikes a chord with that section of my mind that I feel so comfortable in. You know, like when you find that right piece of clothing, that you feel and look your best in, that you feel the most comfortable and invincible. This style of music sort of massages the creative area of my mind. The place i like to go prior to starting projects, or even where i like to spend my time during projects, whether for inspiration or just for the nurturing of the creative organism.
Anyway, that is it for now. I just wanted to share this little find.

There's no "I" in GOW2

I just wanted to write a quick note.
I am extremely appreciative and thankful for all the emails to me from the fans of GOW, these last few days, addressing my contribution to the first Gears of War and not for the sequel. Many of you asked why I was not part of the sequel. It is basically as simple as creative differences. The music I was creating for the sequel was not the direction Epic was looking to go in. There is nothing wrong with that and without going too deep into it, as bummed as I was about it, I respected their decision. I am sure you've heard this happen many times in both the video game and film industry. People just move in different creative directions.

In recent interviews it's been stated, that a bunch of guys at EPIC were pretty big fans of Steve Jablonsky and whose style is quite different from mine. So they made an effort to obtain his services. I am not at liberty to give details as to how things happened, but all I am going to say is that I am honored to be a part of such a franchise especially at it's birth.

As far as I know, Epic and I are still on good terms and I certainly hope to work with them in the future.

If this is not enough to help settle anything that was in question...I can only point you to Epic's Forums as a place to voice your concerns.

*some of the ambient music I did write, for GoW2 did end up in the game, however, I am not sure which ones and where.

Well, I FINALLY got around to posting the music for the short film i scored, "ROGUE 379". I completed the project about a year and a half ago...I think.... and I totally forgot to post the tracks. It was a very relaxing project to work on. Working with Doug was great. He's a very laid back guy with a good vision, which created a comfortable dynamic while scoring the film. I hope to work with Doug again some time soon.

Rogue 379 is showing at the, 2001: A Film Oddyssey in the Norris Theater at USC. Along with 3 other films, on February 10, 7pm.

Well, we are taking advantage of bloggers' features. I posted a poll in the right column about the color scheme for my main site. I've been hearing a lot, since it has been redone, that the colors are too dark and text is too small, but also that it's fine. I would like my site to be readable and able to be navigated with out any issues for the readers. So therefore, I am asking for opinions....crazy huh!? Is this a path I truly want to venture down?? :-) Thanks to all ahead of time for taking part in the poll.

It's a Small Mad World

It is by sheer coincidence that the film Lost Crossing that I just completed scoring, uses Gary Jules' version of Mad World in the film. I say coincidence because the same song was used ever so cleverly for the famous Gears of War promotional television ad, that was run prior to the game being shipped.
I mention this because the director, Eric Blue, requested that I do an instrumental version of Mad World for the festival circuit it is being shown in, but with the instrumentation used in Lost Crossing's score and with hints of the movie's theme scattered through out.

Lost Crossing Wins Award

I have recently completed the score for another Blue Lantern Films Production, "LOST CROSSING". It was once again, a great pleasure working with Eric Blue on one of his projects. It took us some time to come up with the over all sound for the film. I ended up really zoning in on the film's vibe of being "trapped" and "confined" by using a pseudo Bernard Herrmann - Twilight Zone type sound for the score. A small string ensemble, vibes, piano, harp , miscellaneous percussion & a few ambient pads.

The film is a 20 minute short film about:
A 15-year-old Marie running away from home, is befriended by a fellow traveler, Sheila, when they are unexpectedly stranded in the small town of Lost Crossing. Their friendship provides a needed lifeline until a disturbing secret catches up with them and Marie must find a way to escape on her own.

The film won 'Best of Show' at the Accolade Film Awards

Gears of War CD

I have been receiving MANY emails about people who are concerned about the cd release of the Gears of War Score...
Well, the cd has finally been pressed and mass produced. Epic Games has received their shipment and I should be receiving mine very soon. So now it's just a matter of time before Sumthing Else Distribution puts them on sale for the public. I really wish I can give everyone an exact date.

I am hoping that it will also go on sale in iTunes' Music Store for purchase/download.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mike Larson, the Audio Director at Epic games, for taking on most if not all of the burden and responsibility in getting this soundtrack cd released for Epic

KEVIN RIEPL’S music has enhanced the visual mediums of television, films and, most notably, video games. Riepl’s themes range from energetic and rhythmic to emotive to simply macabre and other worldly. Fans of the highly praised Unreal series by Epic Games have been familiar with his work since 2002. It wasn’t until the hit game Gears of War that brought Riepl to the forefront of the video game music world.

After many years of private instruction and further studies at The Mannes College of Music in New York, Riepl moved from his home town in New Jersey, to pursue his dream of composing music for film, television & video games,in Los Angeles, California. Working with a few composers in the Los Angeles area, Kevin learned the ins and outs of the business. He was a long time assistant/writing partner with video game and television composer Kevin Manthei, and then moved on to learn a few tricks of the trade through renowned composer Michael Giacchino.

When he was growing up as a young boy, Riepl’s fascination with movies and television, led to his understanding of how important a role music played in this medium....how it was able to help tell a story and enable the audience to identify with that story and the images on screen. It was the one element he connected with most.

As with many composers the one melody that set Riepl on his journey was the theme and music from John Williams’ score for Star Wars. He was amazed of the impact that this music along with the visuals had on him. He wasn’t sure at that time what it was but he knew he loved it. It wasn’t until he was in 4th grade during an instrument demonstration class where he heard again the Star Wars Theme being played by a trumpeter. It was at that precise moment he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

When Riepl’s appreciation for video games grew, he thought what better than to marry the two elements in his life that appealed to him the most. This in turn led Kevin on a path and career of scoring for video games, television and film.

Currently Riepl is scoring independent films, two triple-A video game titles, one being "Aliens: Colonial Marines", and is also Creative Director of Damage Vault a music / media production entity.
